What parameters to analyze and how to control your pool water

The water in your pool is a crucial element for a pleasant and healthy swim. However, to ensure its quality, it's important to monitor and maintain it regularly. This involves the analysis and control of certain key parameters.

Which parameters to analyze?

Here are the main parameters to monitor:

pH: It should be between 7.2 and 7.6. A pH that is too low or too high can cause skin irritations and equipment corrosion.

Disinfectant level: Chlorine, bromine, active oxygen... The type of disinfectant used and its level must comply with current standards.

TAC (Total Alkalinity): It measures the water's ability to neutralize acids. A stable TAC between 80 and 120 mg/L helps maintain the pH in the ideal zone.

TH (Total Hardness): It indicates the concentration of calcium and magnesium. Too low TH can make the water corrosive, while too high TH can make it cloudy.

Stabilizer: For optimal chlorine efficiency, the stabilizer (cyanuric acid) should be between 20 and 30 mg/L.

Temperature: The ideal temperature for swimming is between 24 and 28°C.

How to analyze your pool water?

The analysis of your pool water is usually done in three stages: sampling, water analysis, and interpretation of results. It's possible to analyze the water either manually or automatically.

Several options exist to analyze your pool water:

• Test strips: Simple and quick, they measure the main parameters.

• Colorimetric analysis kits: More precise, they measure multiple parameters in detail.

• Electronic tester: The most accurate and reliable option, but also the most expensive.

How to control your pool water?

Based on the analysis results, you may need to add chemicals to adjust the water parameters:

• pH plus or pH minus: To adjust the pH.

• Disinfectant: Chlorine, bromine, active oxygen...

• Anti-limescale: To correct too low TH.

• Flocculant: To agglomerate fine particles and make them easier to filter.

Additional tips for healthy water

• Analyze your pool water at least once a week.

• Adjust water parameters if necessary.

• Clean your pool filter and pump regularly.

• Cover your pool when not in use.

• Use winter treatment to protect your pool during winter.
