Maintaining and winterizing the pool Redox controller

How to Maintain and Winterize the Redox Controller?

Regular maintenance of the Redox controller helps to extend its lifespan. The probe is an essential element of this equipment. It is the one that measures the oxidation-reduction potential, it must be clean and requires more attention. Cleaning and winterizing the Redox controller mainly focus on the probe.

How to Maintain the Redox Controller?

The Redox control is an automatic device that requires little maintenance. However, the various parameters of the water (pH, alkalinity, stabilizer...) are of paramount importance for the reliability of its measurement. The balance and stability of the pool water have direct repercussions on the device. Therefore, water monitoring and maintenance are essential.

How to Clean the Redox Probe?

The Redox probe, constantly exposed to the water flow of the pool hydraulic circuit, can become encrusted and clogged. Limestone and microorganisms deposit on it, making the measurement of the oxidation-reduction potential unreliable. Therefore, cleaning twice a year is necessary; once when restarting or winterizing the pool and once during the season. If the water is particularly calcareous, additional cleaning is useful.
Cleaning the Redox probe is simple and quick to perform. It prolongs its lifespan and ensures the reliability of pool water analysis.

  • The power supply is cut off and the bypass valves isolate the Redox controller from the pool hydraulic circuit.
  • A solution of water and hydrochloric acid diluted to 10% is prepared, taking all necessary precautions for handling the corrosive liquid (gloves, goggles, covered arms and legs).
  • The Redox probe is gently removed from its holder.
  • The glass tube of the Redox probe is immersed in the acid bath for an hour, then thoroughly rinsed with clear water.
  • Then, the glass tube is immersed in 2.6% bleach for an hour.
  • Again, the Redox probe is generously rinsed with water and gently shaken to remove excess water. No cloth, even soft, should be used.
  • The probe is reinstalled in the holder or analysis chamber, the bypass valves are reopened, and the power supply is restored.
How to Calibrate the Redox Probe?

Although pre-calibrated at the factory, it is often advisable to calibrate the probe during the first startup. Afterwards, calibration is done at the beginning of the season, and ideally every two months during the bathing season and at the end of the season. The operation is quick, easy to perform but requires meticulousness.
The buffer solution is often provided with the device and should be kept away from heat. Be careful, it expires, and a bottle is generally usable and reliable for one season. It can be obtained from pool stores.

  • The pool filtration is stopped, and the probe holder or analysis chamber is isolated using the bypass.
  • The probe is gently removed from its location, rinsed with clear water, and excess water is removed by shaking the probe gently.
  • The probe is immersed in a small container or glass filled with the calibration solution. If the probe is directly immersed in the bottle, it could contaminate the entire buffer solution, and subsequent calibrations would be inaccurate.
  • The device is calibrated following the manufacturer's instructions described in the maintenance manual.
  • The probe is repositioned in its housing.
  • The water circulation valves of the bypass are opened, and the power supply is reconnected.

How to Winterize the Redox Controller?

Winterizing the Redox control mainly involves cleaning and storing the probe. The probe must be kept in the protective cap of its original packaging or in a cup with a dedicated solution.
In any case, it is soaked at least in tap water, demineralized water is to be avoided. The probe is positioned vertically, with the probe head down.
To preserve the connectors, it is stored in a dry place, frost-free, and free from corrosive vapors. The Redox controller is switched off and isolated.

The Redox control is an automatic and autonomous equipment. It requires little maintenance but for it to generate accurate data without human intervention, the water balance must be perfectly adjusted. This is why equipment such as pH regulators, salt electrolysis, or automatic chlorine treatment are essential.
