What factors disturb the measurement of Redox potential ?

What are the elements that impact Redox control measurement?

Redox control is an essential device to install in the technical room when the pool is protected by a cover or a tarpaulin. It is even more necessary when an automatic chlorine or salt treatment is installed. For autonomous operation and the peace of mind of the owners, Redox control is often associated with other devices, making the pool fully autonomous and the water quality perfect.

What can affect Redox potential results?

Redox potential is a very sensitive data that can be altered if the water balance is not optimal. Numerous parameters come into play. So, what are the factors that influence Redox potential and how can accurate results be obtained?

What factors influence Redox potential?

First and foremost, as with all measurements concerning pool water chemistry, pH or Hydrogen potential is the determining factor. When the pH is low or too high, the Redox potential rises! It is therefore essential to maintain a constant pH level that corresponds to the disinfectant used. For this, the installation of a pH regulator is highly recommended.
Total Alkalinity (TA) is a factor that disrupts the quality of pH measurements, as well as Redox measurements. For these reasons, TA should be maintained at levels between 80 and 120 ppm. Outside of these ranges, the water is unbalanced and the pH and Redox probe measurements are unstable.
Water temperature also plays a role, especially when chlorine treatment is used. Indeed, water that is too warm, above 28°C and for several days, diminishes the water disinfection quality, thus affecting Redox measurement.
For stable Redox readings, the stabilizer level in the water should be between 20 and 40 ppm. Above these values, Redox fluctuates and is unreliable.

Ultimately, all water imbalances lead to inaccurate "measurements", particularly of the water's disinfecting power, Redox. Therefore, it is advisable to equip the pool with control devices (pH regulator...), measurement probes (temperature), a reversible heat pump, conduct thorough checks of various parameters... This is essential for owners' peace of mind, for balanced water, for accurate probe measurements, and for impeccable water quality.

Although Redox results are directly related to proper water balance, this "measurement" remains reliable and essential for the longevity of pool equipment, bathing comfort... when the pool is covered and/or benefits from automatic chlorine, bromine, or salt treatment.
