pH, the cornerstone of water balance
pH, Hydrogen Potential, is a major characteristic of the chemical composition of water. It is a sensitive element that fluctuates with the slightest climatic change, depending on usage or pollution... For the pool, it is the essential element that must be mastered to ensure clear and healthy water. Regularly monitoring the pH of the pool water is essential to maintain clean and enjoyable swimming water.
How to measure the pH of the pool?
pH has an influence on the overall maintenance of the pool. It requires special and regular attention if you want to keep the water pleasant and healthy. So, how and when should you measure it?
Why control the pH of your pool?
An improperly "calibrated" pH creates disturbances in the proper maintenance of pool water. Treatment products and others lose their active power, equipment and pool lining may degrade; lime and algae take over, water changes color, becomes milky, dull, and becomes irritating to swimmers...
How to measure the pH of the pool?
pH can be checked either manually or automatically.
For manual methods, it is measured using strips or colorimetry tests with tablets or liquid. These checks are simple to perform, inexpensive, but the result can be skewed because comparing the obtained color with the reference strip is not always easy. These tests require frequent human intervention; they don't happen on their own!
Automatic tests are placed in the technical room. The pH regulator is a device that can be installed when building the pool or during a renovation. More expensive than the manual method, it is, however, autonomous and performs tests frequently (several times per hour), ensuring controlled water. Pool maintenance is easier, the owner saves time, gains freedom and peace of mind, with no risk of forgetting!
The electronic tester provides more reliable results than manual tests but still requires human intervention. Less expensive than the pH regulator but more than test strips...
When to measure the pH of the pool?
pH control is done when starting up the pool, before each wintering, and at each reopening.
Then, if you want a healthy pool, the check should be done at least once a week in the offseason and at least 2 times a week during the swimming season.
Also, each time the water level is topped up, when treatment products are added, and when there is a sudden and/or violent change in weather, such as a storm, strong wind, rain...
It's a constant check, and without them, there is a high risk of using more maintenance products, the water will turn green, and additional expenses will be incurred.
Obligation or serenity? Practice tests or let equipment do it? Have a third party intervene during holidays or leave in complete peace? Be dependent or invest? Manual control or pH regulator? The choice is yours!
